But they are still supposed to arrive … weaker than predicted.

A brushfire .. put out 20 miles upwind of Malibu.

The Broad Beach sand project explodes in lawsuits.

The runway trim at Santa Monica Airport blocked … temporarily.

And a candlelight vigil for gun control laws is planned by a local church.

This is Malibu’s only local daily news.

It’s the   ((((  Monday ))) news … from Radio Malibu  …. 97 point 5 K B U.

Good morning Mornign View Drive!

Santa Ana Winds Hit 71 Near Mugu

Those Santa Ana winds predicted for early this morning are delayed … but was already gusting to 44 miles an hour over the hill.

And an isolated mountain peak near Point Mugu clocked 71 miles per hour this morning.

Winds up to 45 are still expected on the beach in Malibu this morning … and then after noon.

Tonight … 35 mile wind gusts predicted..

60 mile per hour gusts have already hit up near Mount Wilson … it was blowing 30 miles an hour in Newhall Pass at sunrise.

Red Flag Warnings are up as of 6 a.m. Monday in the Los Angeles-area valleys and the mountains between Dodger Stadium and Malibu.

Vegetation in the Santa Monica Mountains has crossed the threshold, and now has critically-low levels of moisture.

Gusts up to 55 miles an hour in the Hollywood Hills and Santa Monica Mountains, and up to to mph in the mountains near Malibu, were forecast.

A Red Flag Warning means that critical fire weather conditions are expected, as dry and hot winds blast across very dry trees and brush.

Big Fire 25 Miles Upwind of Malibu Put Out

In the 7 a-m hour … a brushfire alarm broke out in Bell Canyon.

That’s 5 miles north of the 1-0-1 Freeway … at the west end of the San Fernando Valley.

LA County dispatchws five helicopters and a full brushed assignment.

Ventura County fire and the city of Los Angeles crews found a fully involved house … a big one … with flames shooting out of the roof.

It was put out before it spread to the brush.

Winds at nearby Chatsworth where reported gusting at 40 mph.

It’s Neighbor Versus Neighbor In Broad Beach Sand Lawsuits

The Broad Beach sand replacement project is exploding in lawsuits.

At least two lawsuits … so far … filed last month.

The issue appears to be how fees are being spread up and down the beach … with some paying more than others.

That is  based on an appraisal system that some homeowners feel is unfair.

Sources close to the matter say negotiations are ongoing.

The Ventura County appeal … over the route that 22-thousand trucks will take … is still pending.

The California Coastal Commission staff is still under heavy pressure … including requests from the Malibu City Council … to allow sand to be brought in by barge from Canada.

That’s opposed to the 22 thousand plus truckloads currently approved to be brought in by truck.

And the Broad Beach Geologic Hazard Abatement District still doesn’t have a final permit to move the sand back onto Broad Beach.

The attorney representing the district says he’s confidant all that will be ironed out on time to rebuild Broad Beach … but next year.

SM Runway Bris Stayed At Last Minute

Construction was to start this morning on shortening the only runway at Santa Monica Airport.

But an aviation website reports that a federal judge issued a last minute temporary restraining order late Friday … in Washington.

A-V Web dot com reports that the last-ditch order could lead to an injunction against ripping up the runway.

A request for a permanent injunction is expected to be heard in about two weeks.

The website says court ruled that it was likely the petitioners would win their case in a trial.

That may be a bit optimistic for their side.

The standard for a temporary restraining order is that there is a -chance- of winning … not probability.

The stay was issued to ensure the damage wasn’t done before they got the aviators get a chance to argue the case in court.

Council’s Water Softener Ban Gets Objections

Certain kinds of water softening machines may get banned by the city council tonight.

The devices remove salt and other minerals from water … and send the salt into either a sewer or … on Malibu … septic tanks.

That’s bad for the groundwater and the city wants to ban them.

But at least some homeowners say … not so fast.

They say removing minerals and salt from water is crucial at the few Malibu houses that rely on well water … which is comparatively crusty as compared to piped in water.

They are asking the city to exempt rural houses … on wells … from the rules.

The city council will also decide what to do about the looming federal deadline on flood maps.

FEMA has drawn up new maps that put many oceanfront houses in the wave uprush zone.

Other jurisdictions have been getting ready for this for months … preparing their own maps to object.

Some critics say Malibu is way late.

Coming Soon To A Park Near You

A giant anchor … or rather … an abstract interpretation of a giant anchor .. may soon be gracing a Malibu park.

Malibu resident Dan Sandel wants to donate his sculpture … he calls it Anchor for Malibu … for display in a park.

The anchor was created by sculptor Emanuel Hatzofe at his studio … near a port in Israel.

It weighs 33 hundred pounds … its six and a half feet tall … nd it looks like a stylized ship anchor.

A big one.

The city cultural affairs commission … and parks commission …. will meet in joint session Tuesday morning at 10 at City Hall to decide whether to accept the gift … and where to put it.
