A summer celebration took place in the Point Dume Plaza courtyard outside of Bank of Books on Saturday afternoon. Malibu locals and visitors pulled up chairs and listened to the bluesy sounds of Chris Mulkey N’ Deluxe band. The crowd sipped on coffee or smoothies, and snacked on delicious fare from one of the many eateries in the plaza.
“Best thing about it is the crowd’s vibe divided, Malibu solid. I love to smell the coffee and the food as we play,” Mulkey said.
Band members include actor/songwriter Chris Mulkey, drummer Greg Davis and Malibu-based pianist Mark Marcellino, who regularly plays at the House of Blues in Hollywood and performed there Saturday night — the closing night for the famous Voo Doo Lounge. Mulkey’s original songs have been featured in movie soundtracks as well as in television series.
“We do jump blues and country soul,” Mulkey said. “I love playing at the Point Dume Plaza. The sound echoes off stones; it’s a good afternoon groove.”
This is the second time that Bank of Books has hosted the Chris Mulkey N’ Deluxe band in the outdoor courtyard. Bank of Books manger Pam Eilerson hopes to continue outdoor concerts throughout the year.
