The bill signed into law by Arizona Governor Jan Brewer, which is going into effect on July 29, is a major setback in the fight for equality and civil rights. It is a direct attack to the Latino community and institutionalizes hate and discrimination. The law represents the outcome of a right wing smear campaign that has labeled all immigrants as criminals and allows racial profiling by police in the state of Arizona by arresting anyone who they suspect of being in the country illegally and who can’t immediately prove otherwise. We need a comprehensive immigration policy at all levels of government that upholds human values and does not force people to live in fear and uncertainty. Arizona will not be targeting blue-eyed blondes. So my thoughts about Doug O’Brien (Letter to the Editor) are that you, Mr. O’Brien, are the one with a personal vendetta who is spewing venom, not the school board.
It seems to me that with our economy in the toilet, people are looking for scapegoats and that immigrants are an easy target. The United States has spent close to three trillion dollars on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan since 2001. What a waste. If we were not involved in these wars and instead using that money to fund projects and programs here at home, think about the good feelings we would have about each other and our world.
