Pepperdine University junior Nick Heath ran all the way to first place with the men’s cross country team at University of California at Riverside’s Highlander Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 14. Heath came in at 17:49.7, seven seconds after the next competitor, for his fourth win with the Waves. The race took place at UCR’s Agricultural Operations Course.
Fellow racer and senior Kevin Maeda finished the race in 18th place. In the women’s race, freshman Abbey Meck finished with a time of 18:44.4, qualifying her for the Waves’ “all-time 5K list.”
“It was a good morning, especially for Nick Heath,” head coach Robert Radnoti said in a statement released by the university’s athletic department. “He ran a really, really nice race. He started out a little conservatively but after about a mile, he moved into the lead group. Toward the end of the race, about 600 meters to go, he was second or third, and he broke them and cruised in for a victory.”
