We are the Malibu Schools Leadership Council (MSLC). Our council is made up of all three Malibu elementary PTA presidents, the MHS PTSA and Shark Fund presidents, representatives from Malibu Special Education Foundation (MSEF), The Malibu Boys and Girls Club, AMPS, and others. Like our Malibu community at large, MSLC cares deeply about our kids, our teachers and school employees, our families, and our community. We also work in close company with the schools’ principals and the superintendent. Our role is for communication and connection between schools, volunteers and para-school organizations in Malibu.
We are deeply grieved by Webster’s incident with parental bullying and what is now a very public and very ugly situation. Each of us loves our community and all of our schools. We believe in our schools, their leaders and our parents. While we know hate and misunderstanding can happen anywhere, even in a school of excellence and community like Webster, we hurt that it is here and that it came into the family of a kindergartener, and the other kindergarten children in this way.
● We affirm every child’s rights to live openly in our community and attend our neighborhood schools.
● We affirm a child’s right to receive IEP or 504 accommodations within classroom instruction.
● We affirm every child’s right to a safe classroom environment.
● We affirm every child’s right to confidentiality within the bonds of the classroom.
● We affirm every child’s right to be a thriving, learning and growing part of our schools’ communities.
We stand against anonymous actions and websites that act against minors, even if the stated intentions of the creators say they were for the good of others. We stand against going public about fellow families instead of addressing any safety concerns and/or grievances within the set protocols of the classroom, school, and district.
We join our schools and district in ongoing and renewed efforts to teach acceptance of all kids, ongoing safety efforts, ongoing teacher education, ongoing community education, and to walk with each other as we are and as we are becoming.
