Latrice Sutton has filed a lawsuit against Los Angeles County for circumstances surrounding the death of her daughter Mitrice Richardson, alleging negligence and intentional and negligent infliction of emotional distress, according to City News Service.

Richardson’s remains were found nearly a year after she went missing in September 2009 after being released from the Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff’s Station where she was booked for not paying a restaurant bill in Malibu.

Her skeletal remains were found in a rugged area of Malibu Canyon in August last year. The cause of death is not known, and the Sheriff’s Department has been severely criticized for its handling of the case.

The suit alleges that deputies improperly removed Richardson’s remains from the site, despite instructions from the county coroner’s office not to disturb the scene. The suit is asking for unspecified damages.

Richardson’s parents previously filed lawsuits accusing the department of negligence, which were consolidated and are awaiting trial.
