Often referred to as the hidden gem in Santa Monica, Marco Polo Imports grew from a passion for travel and design. The family-owned and operated business opened in 1998 and offers exotic and sustainable furniture from around the world.

The store takes its name from Marco Polo, an Italian merchant who traveled extensively throughout Asia in the 13th century. He was a man who did much to introduce new cultures and merchandise to the Europeans, Marco Polo Imports founder Aaron Toledo said.

“I feel it is the perfect name for our company since we introduce our clients to beautiful and unique products from the four corners of the globe,” Toledo said.

The furniture and accessories at Marco Polo are imported from 11 countries, including Tibet, Nepal, Mongolia, Indonesia, Brazil, India, Morocco, Thailand, Philippines, Myanmar, and the Ivory Coast.

“We really enjoy finding unique pieces for our customers to enjoy,” Toledo said.

Marco Polo Imports has its own carpenters and upholsterers and offers a custom design service as well as design consultations.

“We have thousands of fabrics to choose from,” Toledo said. “From classic to contemporary styles, we specialize in helping clients to create a space that is a true reflection of them.”

Marco Polo Imports is a member of the Sustainable Furniture Council. The store is best known for its environmentally friendly furniture, where all the furniture comes from reclaimed or renewable resources.  They offer unique pieces made from things such as reclaimed railroad ties and decommissioned

Indonesian merchant ships. The store also offers an outstanding collection of one-of-a-kind antique furniture. Toledo believes that the uniqueness of their collection, the quality of their products, and the dedication to their clients is what sets Marco Polo aside from other furniture stores.

“We have many celebrity clients who enjoy stopping by regularly,”

Toledo said. “Since our merchandise changes regularly, it is always a new experience when you walk through our doors. You never know what new treasure you’ll find!”

Toledo has been working in the furniture industry since 1992. He first began at a small shop in Venice while attending college. Toledo and his wife, Kim, who were married in Malibu on June 30 this year, live in Malibu with their three rescue dogs Coppelia, Maya and Kimbo. Two of their dogs were rescued from the streets of other countries on their travels.

Marco Polo Imports has been serving Malibu, Santa Monica, and the Westside for 14 years, and Toledo is now excited to announce the launching of their online store in 2013.

He attributes his success to “a lot of hard work, a clear vision of what we want to offer our clients and our dedication to quality and exceptional customer service.”

Marco Polo Imports is currently offering a Thanksgiving Sale through Nov. 30, where clients can save 15 percent to 40 percent on all upholstered furniture.
