A large, privately owned portion of the Santa Monica Mountain range located near Pepperdine University may soon become publicly owned conservation land.

The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors recommended a contribution of approximately $5.265 million toward acquiring 703 acres of unused land, partially owned by director James Cameron.

“This is a very good deal for the taxpayers and future generations who will be able to enjoy one of the most beautiful pieces of property out there,” said County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky.

The contribution is part of a $12 million fund to purchase the land, including a promised $4.5 million from the Wildlife Conservation Board. A vote for the remaining $1.5 million is scheduled by the state Coastal Conservancy for Thursday.
