Fish gotta swim

For many years, vehicular access to the Serra Retreat area from the end of Cross Creek Road to Mariposa de Oro was simply by way of a paved surface in the creek bed. Such a feature commonly is referred to as a “Kentucky crossing” or, incorrectly, a some-other state crossing such as an “Arizona crossing.” As far as I’m concerned, it was a Kentucky crossing, and no carpet-bagging, Draft-EIR writing, Arizona lover can change that.

In any event, because people who purport to know such things said it presented a barrier to the upstream migration of steelhead trout, a submersible bridge has replaced the Rindge’s Kentucky crossing. Costly, yes, but now the trout can swim under it, and a good thing, too. It’s been over a century since the Rindges put in their crossing, and by now the trout must have about given up trying to get past it.
