Given the gloomy rainfall that began late Sunday night, Los Angeles County officials are advising surfers and swimmers at all county beaches, including Malibu, to stay away from storm discharge points such as creeks, drains and rivers.

Increases in stormwater discharge are likely to heighten bacterial levels in local waters for up to three days and can lead to illness.

The advisory was issued Monday morning and is scheduled to last through Thursday at 7:30 a.m. Stretches of county beaches not near the mentioned discharge points are OK to swim and surf in, according the county’s Public Health Department.

Showers are expected on-and-off throughout Los Angeles, with more rain headed into Malibu by Monday afternoon. The rain should clear out by Tuesday and the remainder of the week should bring weather in the 60s and partial clouds.Â
