It comes as no surprise to Malibuites that yet again we had a horrific, Santa Ana wind-driven wildfire this week. Five homes burnt to the ground, residents endangered and evacuated, tens of thousands of acres charred, vast quantities of domestic animals and wildlife killed. And the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy still maintains what a great idea it is to put campers in the narrow, single exit Ramirez Canyon? This is a fool’s idea.
At the last Conservancy public meeting at Webster Elementary School I attended, “Big Joe” Joseph Edmiston trotted out his pet retired firefighter to testify how very capable the canyon’s fire control infrastructure was. Tell that to the devastated homeowners in Simi Valley and Moorpark. Do we have to roll over for Joe’s personal, ego-driven crusade against residents of Ramirez Canyon until he becomes responsible for burning the neighborhood down? Ed Begley, are you listening? Zev Yaroslovsky? Anybody?
