Malibu High set for 6th graders

I am writing about the proposed addition of a 6th grade class at Point Dume Elementary School. As we are still in the discussion period with the school district, it’s important all parties are aware of the significant and well considered project underway at Malibu High School.

In 2006, Malibu voters approved Prop BB funds for new school facilities. More than $33 million is earmarked for Malibu High School. The new building on Morningview Drive will house the school library, administration offices and middle school facilities: four classrooms, two computer labs, three science laboratories, 10 bathrooms and a “green roof” outdoor teaching center. The existing middle school building will be thoroughly renovated: 12 middle school classrooms and the addition of four new bathrooms. The quad area will be designated exclusively for the middle school students. A new high school student quad area will be created near the high school classrooms. Work is scheduled to be complete in 2014.

Why disperse the middle school population throughout various locations in Malibu?

Let the new facilities at Malibu High School be an opportunity to reaffirm our commitment to a single, centralized middle school environment at Malibu High School. Use those new science labs to welcome the Point Dume sixth graders to the next level of marine science. Let them enjoy the benefits of a hard fought-for new middle school home on the Malibu High School campus.
