The Malibu Times published a protracted commentary in its Public Forum section of the April 13 edition by essayist Rick Mullen on immigration. As I am an aged Curmudgeon and unable to reason more than the ordinary 350 words by and large allowed in this weekly tabloid, I think what Mr. Mullen was saying was if the Senate reached a compromise on current immigration legislation, it would have allowed illegal immigrants who have been in the U.S. longer than two years to remain, while those who have been here less than two years would have to leave, but could return as guest workers.
Mr. Mullen’s complaint is that the congress has shown no spine on the issue of immigration or its enforcement. I hope I’m right so far. My perception of Rick’s journalism gets befuddled from here. Thus tracking Rick’s logic, if you are an illegal alien and can prove you broke the present federal law for two years or longer, you’re now protected under the proposed new federal law. Astonishing! America, what a wonderful country!
And that is all I have to say.
