From May 26-30, Pepperdine University’s Smothers Theatre hosted the Parkening International Guitar Competition, with guitarists gathering from 11 different countries to compete for the the gold medal.
According to the Parkening International Guitar Competition website, $65,000 in prize money was distributed amongst the 16 competitors.
Thirty thousand dollars in winnings went to the Gold Medal Winner, Meng Su, a 28 year old from China. In 2006, Su “came to the United States to study with the world-renowned guitarist Maestro Manuel Barrueco,” the website reads. Su has released several CDs in her career and performed in New York City at Carnegie Hall in 2010.
The Silver Medal went to Rovshan Mamedkuliev of Russia who was awarded $12,500 and the Bronze Medal went to Tengyue Zhang of China who was awarded $7,500.
