MHS boys’ water polo suffers last-second defeat

Malibu High School fell 13-12 Tuesday to Rio Mesa High School on a last-second goal in double overtime. Senior Michael Mitze, who had his second consecutive six-goal game, tied the score at 10-10 with 50 seconds left in the fourth quarter to send the game to overtime. Jens Cole put MHS up in the first overtime, but Rio Mesa scored to level the score and first a second overtime. In the second overtime, Mitze again put the Sharks on top. However, Rio Mesa struck back with two unanswered goals, taking the game 13-12.

It is the second close loss Malibu (3-4) has experienced in a week. The Sharks recently fell 12-11 to Notre Dame on a late goal. Their next game is Thursday at Malibu High School.
