I liked the photo of Councilmember Pamela Conley Ulich with Mayor John Sibert in your April 28 issue. It showed the true American spirit of freedom. She is wearing her “save Malibu lagoon” shirt! Our Malibu spirit of freedom seems to get lost at times, but how wonderful that some will rally for what they believe in like the garden center and the lagoon.
Greed, sell-outs, more corporate stores, lies – sounds like material for a TV show! But this is what seems to be happening in Malibu. The rural flavor needs fighting to maintain. The animals and plants need our help. Fight for the ridge and don’t let The Edge ruin the real edge, our mountain ridge. Fight for Malibu Lagoon. Save the birds that are nesting now. Fight for our garden center, and fight to keep out corporate stores, like Whole Foods, that sells unlabeled foods produced with genetically modified organisms. How sad that we must fight for these things, must worry, when there is so much beauty to enjoy, life to enjoy. Integrity, ethics, thinking of others, respect, these are the things to really fight for!
I asked a State Parks employee at the Adamson House if there was a Mother’s Day tea this year and he said no because there was no money. It’s bewildering to me that there are millions of dollars slated for the lagoon project which will not do anything to clean up the water but is mainly for grabbing the money, but a lovely tea can’t be held due to no money.
Malibu is sand slipping though our hands, soon to disappear, configuring nature into the unnatural. Hold on to the memories of birds nesting in the lagoon, of happy carefree beach days, of smiling neighbors waving, cars carefully driving, watching out for kids and animals, the feeling of freedom.
Save Malibu lagoon, save the garden center, save Malibu.
