Robert Joseph Cherbak

Robert Joseph Cherbak passed away Mon., Feb. 23. He was 88.

Born in Upland on April 18, 1926, he lived in Escondido for 29 years. He operated a Standard Oil service station at the Malibu Colony for nearly 20 years, then owned the Trancas Chevron until he retired in 1978 to raise avocados in Valley Center, Calif.

Cherbak was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Lorraine H. Cherbak, and his brothers, Charles Cherbak in 1957 and Boris Cherbak in 2002. He is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law, Yvonne Cherbak Boyd of Malibu, Diane Cherbak and Dave Johannesmeyer of Mancos, Colo., and Sharon and Scott Lumsden of Ellensburg, Wash.; granddaughter Fiona Cherbak (Morgan Ogburn) of Austin, Texas; great-grandson Trevor Young of Macon, Ga.; and brother Peter Cherbak of Upland, Calif.

A memorial service with military honors is scheduled for 11 a.m. on Sat., April 18, at Bellevue Cemetery, 1240 West G St.
