
Local middle and high school students were awarded for their singing talents at the 2013 Annual Malibu Rotary Club Middle and High School Singing Competition at Pepperdine University’s Stauffer Chapel Feb. 12.
Members of the Malibu Rotary Club judged a dozen entrants, awarding the top contestants in the high school division and the middle school division with cash prizes.
Students in the competition performed a diverse program of music ranging from Broadway tunes to jazz and opera.
In the high school division, Hailey Hoffman won first place for her operatic performance of Arditi’s “Il Bacio” (“The Kiss”). Martha Thatcher earned second place for her comedic interpretation of “Ring Them Bells” and Nancy Walecki placed third for her rendition of the George Shearing jazz standard “Lullaby of Birdland.”
In the middle school division, Violet Finn won the first place award for her performance of “On My Own” from the musical “Les Miserables,” Ava Diakeler captured second for her version of “Don’t Rain on My Parade” from the musical “Funny Girl” and Catherine Bogie earned third place for singing Bobby Troupe’s jazz standard “Route 66.”
By winning the first place high school award Hailey Hoffman was automatically entered by the Malibu Rotar y to per f o rm at the Rotary District 5280 Music Competition, which will take place March 9 at Loyola Marymount University.
