We Thought It Would Never End
By Arnold York/Publisher
The year 2003 saw tumultuous change in our world, in our state and in our hometown. With a nation about split down the middle, we went to war in Iraq. And in California, in an almost historically unprecedented manner, we threw out an old governor and brought in a new one. Locally, we gave thumbs down to a development agreement that would have shaped Malibu’s downtown for the next decade or two. The top local stories of the year:
-The defeat of Measure M, the MBC Development Agreement. See November.
-The emergence of a new anti-growth opposition called Malibu CAN
-The firing of two Planning Commission members and the resignation of a third. See December.
-The closing of Civic Center Way and the storm it created. See August.
-The fires that could have been, but was stopped in time. See January.
-The continued exodus of city management personal. See all year.
-The never-ending battle with the California Coastal Commission over the Malibu LCP. See forever.
-The passage of Measure S, the parcel tax for education. See June.
-The community closed ranks behind two fired Ralph’s grocery clerks. See March.
