Malibu fire update

As of 12:25 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 7, the Los Angeles Fire Department reported that the Trancas Canyon fire in Malibu is 48 percent contained.

Fire suppression efforts are concentrated in the Encinal and Decker canyons area.

Malibu High, Malibu Methodist Preschool and Juan Cabrillo Elementary schools are closed today, Jan. 7. The Red Cross evacuation center at Malibu High School is closed for the time being. Evacuation centers have been established at Leo Carrillo State Beach and Sycamore Cove.

More than 2,200 acres have been burned, three homes and one car damaged. Residents from Decker and Encinal canyons have been evacuated. Bluffs Park is closed to the public to allow for use by Fire Department helicopters. More than 1,000 emergency personnel are currently on duty.

Road closures:Pacific Coast Highway southbound is closed at Las Posas. Decker Canyon Road is closed from Pacific Coast Highway to Mulholland Highway. Encinal Canyon Road is closed north from PCH. Access to PCH westbound at Trancas Canyon is limited to residents and local business employees. Proof of residence is required to gain access. The city warns delays in access to this area of PCH.

Kanan Dume Road southbound is open to Malibu residents and those with business in the area. Access is limited to those with business at the courthouse.

In order to assist emergency personnel, the City of Malibu requests that people avoid coming to this area unless there is an immediate personal or business need to gain access.
